Mark Phillips: The American Question

2/23/03: Ain't no oil on Jolo Island.

One reason "war for oil" is such an inadequate explanation for the War on Islam is that it has nothing to say about the new front on Jolo Island. Ain't no oil on Jolo island.

So that the antiwar movement has been all but silent. Are there protests being organized? Will the huge antiwar mobilizations of recent weeks continue after the U.S. victory over Saddam, as the Jolo campaign drags on? Doubtful.

The "war for oil" narrative has a demobilizing impact. We need to get past it to sustain our mobilizations through the years and the many military episodes ahead.

It's still not a war for oil. Let's stop saying that it is.
