Mark Phillips: The American Question

3/16/03: A hundred to one.

San Francisco, 10/26/02
San Francisco, October 26, 2002.

Throughout the weekend, CNN has emphasized the handful of small pro-war rallies organized by right-wing radio. "Thousands" in Atlanta; a few hundred in other cities. As if these pitiable displays could be measured against the millions who rallied at the same time to oppose the coming invasion.

Tellingly, the corporate media have consistently echoed right-wing organizers' party line. These rallies are "pro-America." They "support our troops." As if to imply... Well you know what.

Could there be a more inescapable measure of public sentiment in America? Thousands pro, millions anti. Nevermind the polls with their silly distinctions between U.N. resolutions versus no U.N. resolutions, allies versus no allies. Americans oppose the war by 100-to-one. These rallies are the clearest statement.
