Mark Phillips: The American Question
4/13/03: The next campaign?
The U.K.
Observer
reports strong public and private indications from the American government that Syria, and
with it Lebanon's
Hizballah movement, will be the next targets of the War on Islam.
Hawks in and close to the Bush White House have prepared the ground for an attack
on Syria, raising the specter of Hizballah, of alleged Syrian plans to welcome
refugees from Saddam Hussein's fallen regime, and of what the administration insists
is Syrian support for Iraq during the war.
"There will have to be change in Syria, plainly," said Wolfowitz.
The rapid and easy military victory over Saddam has encouraged this kind of arrogance.
It's a mistake. Hizballah is a mass movement with deep social roots, which has twice
defeated the world's greatest army. Toppling the Ba'ath in Syria may be as easy as
it was in Iraq. An occupation of south Lebanon will not be.
American neocon hawks call these threats "phase three" of the War on Islam.
How many more phases will there be?
