Mark Phillips: The American Question

Today's news that reservists' tours of duty have been extended is bad news all around.

Bad for the reservists and their families.

Bad for the people of Iraq, who will continue to suffer unwanted foreign occupation.

Bad for the administration, who would be fighting new wars today, if it could find the troops.

Bad for the American people, who face sacrifice without end for an unjust and unwinnable cause.

Bad for the peoples of the Islamic world, who face invasion and occupation, should Bush's hands become untied.

The United States' volunteer military is unable to muster forces large enough to occupy Iraq and Afghanistan while fighting new campaigns in the War on Islam. If Bush is re-elected, the draft is inevitable.
