Mark Phillips: The American Question
9/11/03: Year two.
-
The Iraqi people oppose American occupation and are evolving an increasingly
effective resistance.
-
The puppet government imposed on Afghanistan is opposed by fractious warlords
and a resurgent Taliban who are more popular and more pervasive than typically
reported by U.S. news media.
-
Iraqi popular resistance has tied down the troops which Bush would have
used to launch a "phase three" campaign, perhaps in Lebanon or Syria. The
War on Islam is stalled in Iraq and Afghanistan.
-
The sharp ruling-class
disconsensus
over Iraq has muted since the spring, but continues to fester.
The Dean and Kucinich campaigns are symptoms.
-
The Internet's promise as an organizing tool has emerged into mainstream
cognizance, fueling MoveOn.org and the Dean campaign.
-
Osama Been Forgotten is still at large.
-
Opinion polls suggest that the neocon disaster in Iraq is of grave concern to
the American public. Yet the antiwar movement has remained muted since the
invasion.
