Mark Phillips: The American Question
3/31/04: Not welcome.
The Bush administration invaded Iraq in the expectation, it said, that Americans
would be welcome as liberators.
We're not.
Did Bush and his people deliberately lie to us?
Probably not.
People are prisoners of the stories they tell. Cheney,
Wolfowitz and others on the right are probably sincere in explaining the world
through their cherished
narrative
of liberation and democratization. It's probably hard to justify imperialism
to oneself.
Today's
images
of the people of Fallujah mutilating the bodies of four dead mercenaries form a
counter-narrative, an opposing story with which well-meaning and good-hearted Americans
must now wrestle.
How can antiwar activists help them?
