Mark Phillips: The American Question

January 05, 2006: War and poverty

The single most important front in the war on terror is the battle against poverty.

This is one of the reasons why Republican politicians are unfit to lead.

After the tsunami in which a quarter of a million poor people were killed, what did the leader of the free world do? Nothing. After Hurricane Katrina, during which tens of thousands of poor Americans were jeapardized and displaced, what did the President do? Nothing.

The Republican leadership is too busy waging war on the poor to be effective in the war on terror.
