Ted Stolze   Ted Stolze teaches philosophy at Cerritos College, east of Los Angeles. He's been active in anti-war, labor, and social justice movements since the early 1980s. He's especially interested in the renewal of socialist theory and strategy. He's co-editor of The New Spinoza, and a lover of the California redwoods and Southwestern pictographs and petroglyphs.

December 29, 2006: Pomegranates and Activism

After eating a pomegranate for the first time in years, an analogy occurred to me.

Political activism is like trying to eat a pomegranate: It is sensual, but time consuming, messy, full of seeds, and appears to offer few rewards. It can even leave a slightly bitter taste in your mouth. However, as medical research has shown, it is quite healthy (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomegranate)
