Demonstrations as Narrative
Images of demonstrations: October 6, 2002 Union Square, San Francisco
Our installment of the national demos organized by
Not In Our Name.
The local
press
estimated the crowd at 8,000. Our consensus was double that.
Beautiful day: clear and hot, San Francisco's version of Indian summer. Multiple feeder
marches fed a central rally which filled Union Square to overflowing.
Interesting choice for a rally site: the epicenter of San Francisco's "upscale"
shopping district. The plaza is like a giant billboard for Nike, Levi's, Macy's, and
Saks Fifth Avenue. Expensive coffee for sale, along with the activist literature.
Demonstrators climbed to Macy's roof and unfurled a large banner.
We noticed a lot of families taking part, who seemed new to all this. That's a great
sign: more than the usual left ghetto.
The heat got to us. We spent most of the rally huddled with several hundred others, in
the shade of the Macy's highrise. :-)
