Demonstrations as Narrative
Images of demonstrations: October 26, 2002 Civic Center, San Francisco
Our installment of the national demos organized by
International ANSWER.
The local
press
estimated the crowd at 42,000. Our consensus was 100,000.
Clearly the largest rally since the Gulf War monsters on 1/19/91 and 1/26/91. Crowd so large
it was uncomfortable: many of us found ourselves jittery from inability to move around.
Families: grandparents, toddlers in strollers. The right-wing party line will be that these
events are the last hurrah of the '60s hippies. Look again.
We noticed very many homemade signs, which seems to indicate that the weight of organized
groups was less than what we're used to. What does this mean? Is it a good thing? -- more
people from more walks of life standing up to be counted? Is it a bad thing? -- decay of
organized constituencies such as unions and grassroots orgs? We dunno.
Tell everybody
what you think.
One of the Trouble Tickets project members, Mark Phillips, has posted an account of
this event on his personal
blog.
