Demonstrations as Narrative
Images of demonstrations: February 15, 2003 Atlanta, GA
Our roving correspondent was in Atlanta for the weekend of huge international protest
against Bush's invasion of Iraq.
The event was as they say, small but spirited. Organizers thanked the crowd of about 300
for turning up on short notice: only about three weeks of preparation went into it. There
were several small marches feeding an outdoor demonstration and indoor rally. We
noticed a good percentage of African-American participants, a happy contrast to the San
Francisco events.
Quite an extraordinary thing: to participate in a weekend of protest with such global
sweep. That the movement has momentum is undeniable, even to the right-wing. What
will happen when the shooting starts?
Everywhere we went in Atlanta were white-on-blue lawn signs reading "War is not
the Answer". Very nice organizing by local groups.
