"Conservatives descend from the 'Tories' of the Revolutionary War"


Description: Challenges the self-professed continuity of conservativism with American Revolutionary ideals.
Purpose: Contribute to the marginalization of right-wing ideological narratives.
Purpose: Reclaim patriotism.
Example: The Tories supported Empire (the British one), while Patriots stood for a democratic republic.
Example: Tories supported the crown's standing army and navy, while Patriots held that militarism was a threat to liberty.
Example: Tories supported the government's right to arbitrary control over people's bodies, via empressment, arbitrary arrest, and other abuses; while Patriots opposed forced military recruitment and defended the right of habeas corpus.
Example: Tories tended to support state association with religion, while Patriots stood for separation of church and state (many Patriots were deists or atheists).
